April 1, 2009

Welcome to April everyone! I'm so glad people have been reminding me that it's April Fool's Day because there are some upsetting spoofs floating around the internet, including an article claiming my very dear Neil Gaiman could lose the Newbery Medal! I would have cried if I'd seen that without warning.

Anyway, also welcome to Blog Every Day April! We'll see how this goes because I am very bad at writing in this blog regularly. Hopefully this will make me better.

This afternoon I will be attending part of the Texas Library Association's (TLA) Annual Conference here in Houston. That's why there aren't any programs this week, we're short on staff a lot of the time. Sorry! But today I shall be seeing The Book Cart Drill Team State Championship! What's a Book Cart Drill Team you ask? This, my dear friends is a Book Cart Drill Team:

It's exactly what it sounds like, Librarians doing choreographed dance moves with book carts. Awesome, right?

So I know you're jealous and upset that you won't be seeing me this afternoon, but it's going to be worse because I also won't be at the library tomorrow! So sorry, but I'm taking 7 kids from the junior high and high schools to the conference as well! They won't get to see the Drill Teams, but they will get to meet some YA authors, attend Round Table discussions about books, and get some free stuff! I'm very excited and yet nervous about this. I think we're going to have a blast, but I'm afraid of losing people! Once, when I was little I got very lost at the Rodeo Carnival. It was not a fun experience for anyone involved.

So, fears aside, I have yet another thing to announce for April! And that is the Poetry Contest!!! This is 4th Annual Friendswood Library Poetry Contest. It's open for ages 8-18. And there will be prizes!! Just turn your entries in to the desk in the Children's Department anytime until April 21st! The winners will be announced at a special Coffee House Poetry Reading on April 24th at 5:00pm!

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban the second time around

Sirius Black's Wanted Poster Title/Year originally published: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban/1999 When I originally read it: 1999, I believe I got it for Christmas… What I thought of it then: When I first read this book I thought parts of it were the saddest things I’d ever read. When Harry overhears that his parents’ best friend betrayed them to Voldemort and was so angry he wanted to kill Sirius Black I cried, a lot. Besides that I thought the whole Time Turner device was really nifty on J.K.'s part (yeah, we're close, I can call her that*). I loved Lupin and the fact that chocolate is the remedy for when you've had all your worst memories brought to mind by Dementors.I also always love Scabbers so I was really sad when he turned out to be the betrayer of Lily and James Potter. Sigh. When I re-read it: January 2011 What my thoughts are now: This book is so great, I can see why it's a lot of people's favorite of the series. I mean, c'mon t...

Duct Tape Pencil Bag

 1. Gather supplies.  2. Unwrap one length of duct tape and carefully set plastic bag on top. Go slowly so there are no air bubbles in the duct tape! 3. Unwrap other color of duct tape and tape the opposite side of the bag. 4. Trim extra duct tape off. 5. Continue adding duct tape (You can do all one color on each side or alternate like I did. Trim sides so everything is even.  6. Optional, if you want to store your pencil bag in your binder, mark where the rings are located. 6. Use a hole punch to make holes. 7. Decorate with stickers or permanent markers!
