Zaki Con 2019: Artist Alley

No convention would be complete without an Artists' Alley, the place where artists can display and sell their artwork and fans can find unique pieces to decorate their homes or give as gifts.  Artists' Alley at San Diego Comic Con Artists' Alley come as a big or as small as conventions do, which means ours is on the smaller side. But not without its share of talent! Our artists consist of local talent, mostly teens who are just starting out in the world of art, but already producing amazing things. Make sure to peruse their selections of prints, buttons, stickers, commission a piece of original artwork and more! And if you'd like to have your own table at Zaki Con 2019, fill out this form to get started!  Zaki Con Artist Application

Zaki Con 2019: The Movies

Zaki Con was created when a group of teens in our Teen Advisory Group decided they wanted to host a Studio Ghibli movie marathon. Movies like Howl's Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro, and Spirited Away have been favorite during Young Adult programs here at the library for years and they wanted a way to share that with more people. The idea blossomed to include crafts for kids and families, games, food, and art made by local (mostly teen) artists.  But the movies are where we started and what gave our mini convention its name. Hayao Miyazaki co-founded Studio Ghibli in 1985 and directed many of its most famous films. His birthday is January 5th and we try to hold Zaki Con as close to that date as we can.  Every year we screen four movies. Three from Studio Ghibli and a fourth highlighting a different studio that we think our attendees will enjoy. Here is some info about the movies we'll be showing this year to help you plan your Zaki Con experience. Porco Rosso 1992 Rated

STEM Girls of the World

Back in October, a Girl Scout named Catherine held a program for girls about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). There were lots of fun experiments and activities and your girls were invited to hear from women who work in STEM fields about why they love their jobs.  Whether you had the chance to attend or not, you can recreate the activities from that day, along with a few more, because Catherine has put together a scrapbook of the event. Full of interesting information, more resources, and lots of activities, you'll be a scientist before you know it! Click below to access the scrapbook! STEM Girls of the World Scrapbook
