Summer Reading Club and Programs at the Library!

I know you're excited about summer, who can blame you? But you know who is even MORE excited about summer? ME!

I've got a bunch of excellent things planned in June and July, for instance:

See that last program on the brochure? It's an overnight lock-in. That's right, 12 hours IN THE LIBRARY. No one allowed in or out but Young Adults. BUT, you have to attend 3 programs and read 21 hours in the Summer Reading Club. "But Sti, how do you join the Reading Club?", you ask. Or you would if this were an infomercial...This year we're going digital, so starting June 1 (yes, a Sunday and yes before school is technically out) you can go to the library's website or the library (free) app and sign up to log your hours spent reading this summer!

Here's what the website will look like when you get there:

Create an account and log your hours! The website will keep track of them and tell you when you've earned a prize. Just as in years past there are 5 stages to the club:
  •  Stage 1=3 hours
  • Stage 2=6 hours (9 hours total)
  • Stage 3=12 hours (21 hours total)
  • Stage 4=24 hours (45 hours total)
  • Stage 5=48 hours (93 hours total)
Now before you start complaining that 93 hours is so much time....93 hours over an 83 day long summer (June 1-August 22) means you only have to read 53.4 minutes per day. TOTALLY doable. Especially if you're listening to audiobooks or completely that dreaded but mandatory and not always awful require summer reading for school.

Okay, that's all I've got for now. If you have questions, leave me a comment or come in and see me! I'll be the one rocking the rainbow hair all summer!

DFTBA,
Sti

Summer 2021 Recommendations for Your High School Reader!

Summer is fast approaching and if you have a high school reader, you might be looking for new titles to engage them this summer. Librarian, historian, and author Alexandria Brown has allowed us to share their recommended lists to help make that easier! Per their blog*: As a high school librarian, offering reading recommendations for students is one of my favorite parts of my job. These lists are for parents, library workers, and teen readers... I created these lists through an alchemy involving age of the protagonists, themes, genre, tone, complexity, reader skill/comfortability level, events and topics a student will likely encounter in their studies during the school year, and books they are unlikely to read for school. I also tried to pick materials that published in the last few years or will be published by June 2021. Preference to #ownvoices and marginalized authors. Below you'll find links to their lists broken up by grade level. Whether you know an avid reader who always...
