Summer at the Library!

Looking for fun things to do this summer? We've got you covered!*

I'm posting the Young Adult programs here (since this is, you know, the Young Adult blog), and I'll explain a few of the programs for those of you who like to know exactly how your day is going to go.

So here's the rundown on what everything means:

6/2-3 Doctor Who Marathon: join us as we watch this British Sci-Fi show about a time traveling alien!

6/10 Elemental Superheroes: Create and draw your first superhero of the summer using one of the Elements on the Periodic Table as inspiration.

6/12 Action Hero Mash-Up: Create a wacky superhero by taking apart old toys and gluing them together in new combinations

6/17 Comic Book Workshop with Artist Jessi Jordan: Exactly what it sounds like! Artist Jessi Jordan is joining us to talk about what it's like to be an artist, and teach how to draw our own comics!

6/19 Heroes Unmasked Trivia: Superhero-themed trivia game (there may be prizes)

6/24 Epic Cosplay Day: This is the one that is probably the most confusing. Cosplay is basically when you dress in costume when it's not Halloween. So we'll be making costumes/disguises!

6/26 Group Art Project: Before they start construction on the Activity Room (see footnote below) we're going to paint all over the walls!

Extra programs:
NaNoWriMo Prep: NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month (which happens several times a year, including July). This program is for young writers who want to challenge themselves to write a 30,000 word book in 30 days. In June we'll start preparing our brains and our stories!

Spelling with Syamantak: Spelling Bee Workshop: First, let's talk about how ironic it is that I spelled his name wrong in the title for a spelling workshop! Syamantak is a CCISD student who competed in the Scripps National Spelling Bee and is coming to share his tips on becoming a spelling champ!

Hope this helps and gets you more excited about the summer!

And be sure to sign up for the Summer Reading Club at http://friendswoodsr.evanced.info/ and be sure to choose the Young Adult tab.

*Well, you're covered in June at least. In July they'll probably be knocking down the walls of our Activity Room and thus- no activities later in the summer...

October Calendar

Join us in Centennial Park as we resume our outdoor storytimes in the (hopefully) cooler weather! We'll be in the amphitheater at 9:30am on Mondays for Rattle & Rhyme (0-18 months), Tuesdays for Toddler Time (0-3 years), and Wednesdays for Preschool Storytime (3-6 years)!

Zaki Con 2019: Cosplay Contest!

The final event  of Zaki Con is our cosplay contest. I assume you're familiar with cosplay if you're reading, but just in case you aren't: cosplay is " the practice of dressing up as a character from a movie, book, or video game, especially one from the Japanese genres of manga and anime." And anyone can do it! Young and old alike are adorable when dressing as their favorite characters from books, movies, and anime! At Zaki Con, we want to see your interpretation of cosplay! You can enter as one person or as a group (though groups will have to share prizes if they win). All you have to do is come dressed as your favorite character. Since Zaki Con is a family event and it is held in the public library, all costumes must be appropriate for our setting and audience! Entries will be judged by a panel of judges from the library and the community. We look forward to seeing your cosplays during the Con and at the contest which will be held at 5:00pm on Saturda

Duct Tape Pencil Bag

 1. Gather supplies.  2. Unwrap one length of duct tape and carefully set plastic bag on top. Go slowly so there are no air bubbles in the duct tape! 3. Unwrap other color of duct tape and tape the opposite side of the bag. 4. Trim extra duct tape off. 5. Continue adding duct tape (You can do all one color on each side or alternate like I did. Trim sides so everything is even.  6. Optional, if you want to store your pencil bag in your binder, mark where the rings are located. 6. Use a hole punch to make holes. 7. Decorate with stickers or permanent markers!
