Raven Cycle Fan Art!

So. The inimitable Maggie Stiefvater created a deck of tarot cards based on her Raven Cyle series and she's holding a contest to give away 10 decks of them. Keith decided he couldn't do anything worthy but he thought I could.

Since I'd just completed a project using acorns, I thought: "Hey, I could make The Acorn Boys!" And Keith's response was: "You were put on this earth to make Acorn Boys."

And so, I present to you, The Acorn Boys based on The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater.

First we have our heroine Blue Sargent, daughter of psychics but no psychic herself. She reminds her mom of the Page of Cups and gets called Blue Lily by a crazy lady (I chose a Calla lily because I like them better than the other kind, plus I love Calla). She is known for her DIY style and short, dark hair. I made up the rest of her face because there isn't a ton of description about it, but we know she's tiny because she didn't eat her vegetables.

Next up is Richard Gansey III. Gansey is moneyed and privileged and doesn't quite get how that affects the way he sees the world around him. But he's also a great friend and an ace researcher. He's driven to find Glendower, an ancient Welsh king who may be buried on the ley lines near Henrietta, Virginia. Gansey is also deathly allergic to hornets and drives an ornery orange Camaro affectionately called The Pig.

Adam Parrish does not come from money. His home life is horrible, as evidenced by his black eye :( He once wore a shirt bearing the Coca-Cola logo and is now known as Coca-Cola by at least one resident of 300 Fox Way, here he's only wearing a hat with the white swirl. Adam is now connected with Cabeswater, that magical forest with latin whispering trees.

This is Noah Czerny.

Ronan Lynch. Ahhh Ronan Lynch. Or as I usually say, RONAAAANNNNN. Ronan is troubled and honest. Angry and vulnerable. He has buzzed hair and a baby raven named Chainsaw. He likes dangerous things and loves his baby brother Matthew. He gets into fistfights with his brother Declan but sits beside him at mass every Sunday. Ronan Lynch.

Joseph Kavinsky. A little lot sleazy, but he drives a fast car and wears white sunglasses. And he has a thing for Ronan. See Dream Thieves for more info.

So I also made a Cabeswater and a Pig...

Kavinsky and Ronan are my No-TP

Sorry for the picture heavy post, I'm afraid the videos won't load properly and this is kind of 3-dimensional work...

Obviously my Number 1 inspiration for this madness is Maggie Stiefvater's writing, but I'd be remiss if I didn't say that I was also heavily influenced by a lot of the amazing fan art of the Raven Boys that is already out there, as well as the Raven Boys Wiki. But I drew the most inspiration, visually, from the incredible art of tumblr user Cassandra Jean (if you like fanart based on amazing YA books, check her out!), so if any of the boys look familiar it's because they have a lot in common with her interpretations.

DFTBA,
Sti

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban the second time around

Sirius Black's Wanted Poster Title/Year originally published: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban/1999 When I originally read it: 1999, I believe I got it for Christmas… What I thought of it then: When I first read this book I thought parts of it were the saddest things I’d ever read. When Harry overhears that his parents’ best friend betrayed them to Voldemort and was so angry he wanted to kill Sirius Black I cried, a lot. Besides that I thought the whole Time Turner device was really nifty on J.K.'s part (yeah, we're close, I can call her that*). I loved Lupin and the fact that chocolate is the remedy for when you've had all your worst memories brought to mind by Dementors.I also always love Scabbers so I was really sad when he turned out to be the betrayer of Lily and James Potter. Sigh. When I re-read it: January 2011 What my thoughts are now: This book is so great, I can see why it's a lot of people's favorite of the series. I mean, c'mon t...

Summer 2021 Recommendations for Your High School Reader!

Summer is fast approaching and if you have a high school reader, you might be looking for new titles to engage them this summer. Librarian, historian, and author Alexandria Brown has allowed us to share their recommended lists to help make that easier! Per their blog*: As a high school librarian, offering reading recommendations for students is one of my favorite parts of my job. These lists are for parents, library workers, and teen readers... I created these lists through an alchemy involving age of the protagonists, themes, genre, tone, complexity, reader skill/comfortability level, events and topics a student will likely encounter in their studies during the school year, and books they are unlikely to read for school. I also tried to pick materials that published in the last few years or will be published by June 2021. Preference to #ownvoices and marginalized authors. Below you'll find links to their lists broken up by grade level. Whether you know an avid reader who always...
